Bleed SRAM brakes (DOT fluid)

This page is for SRAM brake systems that use DOT fluid (usually DOT 5.1). Spongy levers usually mean air in the line. Use a SRAM-compatible DOT bleed kit and fresh DOT fluid only. Do not put mineral oil in a SRAM system.

How to bleed a SRAM brake system

SRAM DOT method only. Use a SRAM DOT bleed kit and DOT 5.1 (or the DOT grade your SRAM model specifies). If pads, pistons, or hoses look worn, a shop may be faster and safer.

Before you start

  • Confirm the bike has SRAM brakes before you start.
  • Work over a drip tray. DOT fluid damages paint and some plastics.
  • Remove the wheels or use pad spacers so you do not contaminate the pads.
  • If the lever still feels soft after a careful bleed, stop and take it to a shop.
