Bleed Shimano brakes (mineral oil)

This page is for Shimano brake systems that use mineral oil. Spongy levers usually mean air in the line. Use a Shimano-compatible mineral-oil bleed kit and mineral oil only. Do not put DOT fluid in a Shimano system.

Before you start

Confirm the bike has Shimano brakes before you start.
Keep mineral oil and DOT kits on separate shelves so they never get mixed.
Remove the wheels or use pad spacers so you do not contaminate the pads.
If the lever still feels soft after a careful bleed, stop and take it to a shop.
