Bike categories

Shops and brands talk about what the bike is built for — travel, geometry, and weight. That is separate fromrace formats(how a event is timed). A “trail” or “all-mountain” bike can still race enduro; an XC race bike is usually lighter with less suspension travel.

Cross-country (XC) bikes

Lighter frames, less travel, geared for climbing efficiency and full-lap racing. Common on NICA race day for many riders.

Trail / all-mountain

Middle ground: more travel and confidence on descents than a pure XC race bike, without going full gravity. Many recreational and “do-it-all” mountain bikes live here.

Enduro bikes

Longer travel and sturdier builds for timed downs and rough stage racing, while still being rideable up the climbs between stages.

Downhill bikes

Maximum travel and strength for descending. Usually paired with a lift or shuttle — not built as all-day climbers.
